Harriet Fletcher (née Lawton)

Through the exploration of multiple craft materials and processes, Harriet’s practice highlights the beauty of objects and collections. Contemporary interpretations of traditional ornament, her design pieces and art objects feature remediated marks, patterns and motifs taken from various cultures and eras.

Each series within her work celebrates the value of a specific collection, including the aesthetics and narratives of its objects. Her work plays with illusion and scale, crossing materials and techniques; as ornament moves through 2D and 3D surfaces. She explores hand-processes including drawing, screen-printing and hand-built ceramic alongside digital processes such as laser and water-jet cutting, in order to create installations for multiple viewers; framed works for interior settings; or wearable fabric and jewellery pieces.

Harriet’s portfolio includes commissions for The Whitworth Manchester and Wakefield Museum; a residency at The Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair; exhibitions with Gawthorpe Textiles Collection and The Bluecoat Display Centre; and multi-disciplinary teaching projects with the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, the Hepworth Wakefield and The Crafts Council.
